“If you could pick one retailer to work for, who would it be?” The most important question posed by 2016’s Retail Employer of the Year award.
The Warehouse has taken out a well-deserved fifth successive victory as Retail Employer of the Year in the large employer category. Unlike many other competitions where a panel would determine the winner, this award relied on voting from past and present employees, as well as customers and the local community to crown the winner. Who best to judge what makes a great employer than the team members and customers.
We had a chat with Jessica (Menswear Buyer), Louise (Menswear Buying Support Specialist) and Nikita (Graphic Designer) to discuss their collaboration and involvement in creating the ‘Back Country’ clothing range.
The Warehouse ‘Back Country’ clothing range is designed in-house. This gives Nikita more control over the design process and the Buyers more control over what is created and distributed in store.

The Warehouse Group is committed to changing the perception of Retail as a career and making it a desirable and rewarding career choice for New Zealanders. In 2014, The Warehouse Group partnered with Massey University to develop and launch The Bachelor of Retail and Business Management, New Zealand’s first degree focused exclusively on the retail sector. The degree was created in response to the increasing demand in New Zealand for skilled individuals in retail and business management. The course consists of retail-focused papers, covering a broad range of areas including retail buying and planning, merchandising, strategy and business planning and retail operations, both in a store and online context.
I began my journey with The Warehouse at the beginning of this year, when I interviewed with the Executive General Manager of Clothing for a co-op placement within the Head to Toe merchandise team. While discussing my background in Economics and International Business, we quickly realised retail planning was a great environment for me to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.
I joined the planning team in the Footwear Department where my role was merchandise support. On my first day I was a little nervous and apprehensive. I had no idea merchandise planning was even a job before Co-op so I was very unsure of how the next 9 weeks was going to go.
