The power of #retailcareers

The Warehouse is part of The Warehouse Group. The Warehouse Group is playing a leadership role promoting Retail as a Career in New Zealand and ensuring it is a desirable career choice.

We are aware of the common misperceptions about our industry, and we are leading our industry to change these. Some of these attitudes include: Retail is poorly paid, it’s boring, and it’s not a real career. These perceptions simply are not true!

The Warehouse Group is working with industry bodies, universities and with our own Team Members to help people understand what a great, rewarding career retail can be. Improving perceptions of retail as a career has always been important for The Warehouse Group, but in 2013 the business decided to further invest and create a strategy to drive retail as a career. Some of the initiatives that we have worked on are:

  • Supporting the Massey University Bachelor of Retail and Business Management degree
  • Creating leadership programmes for our team members
  • Helping high school students through The Warehouse Red Shirts in Schools programme

Our Talent team has delivered a number of initiatives that have helped alter the perception of retail but the one that has made the most impact with no cost is a hashtag we started: #retailcareers.

#retailcareers has been described as a ‘movement’ and people in the retail industry are buzzing about it. It has even been picked up by other companies in the retail industry, both in New Zealand and in Australia. We are pleased that other retailers are using it, together we can change the perception of our industry; The Warehouse Group can’t do it alone.

For The Warehouse Group #retailcareers is a way for us to amplify our message consistently and easily. Our team and leaders are using it on their internal and external social media posts. It has given our team a sense of pride in what we are doing. Our team are encouraged to share an honest representation of what it is like to work in retail including the fun times, special achievements and an insight into a day in the life of their role in retail.

Candidates can search the hashtag and gain a better understanding of what we are doing as a business, giving them insight into what The Warehouse is like as an employer directly from our people.
