Retail Employer of the Year for the Fifth Time Running

“If you could pick one retailer to work for, who would it be?” The most important question posed by 2016’s Retail Employer of the Year award.

The Warehouse has taken out a well-deserved fifth successive victory as Retail Employer of the Year in the large employer category. Unlike many other competitions where a panel would determine the winner, this award relied on voting from past and present employees, as well as customers and the local community to crown the winner. Who best to judge what makes a great employer than the team members and customers.

And what makes a great employer? A great employer means different things to different people. The voting system allowed each voter to note how they made their decision, based on factors such as business culture, career progression, work/life balance, leadership style and training and development.

The Warehouse lies within the wider The Warehouse Group. The Warehouse Group has made it their mission to lead the industry in promoting retail as a career of choice, they do this by setting the standard with a career retailer wage and by showcasing the variety of roles and career opportunities within the group.

Here are samples of the voter’s comments from this year’s award:

“Very people focused. Caring and thoughtful to their employees. Great benefits and gives staff the feeling of long term secure jobs.”

“They are the best, have awesome benefits for the employees, my 18 years with them shows how great they are.”

Senior leaders in the business also shared their thoughts on the win:

Simon Turner, The Warehouse CEO says that “Our People Centred culture and Way of Working truly sets us apart from other New Zealand retailers – by working together as one team, we’ve achieved a lot we can be proud of.”

Mark Ashton, The Warehouse General Manager People Support says that “Winning REOTY is such great recognition for our team! We have an 8,500+ strong, passionate team here that love working at The Warehouse. We have our highest ever engagement score (as per IBMs engagement survey), and this is just further confirmation that we are one of New Zealand’s best places to work. We are committed to being a people centred business. That means putting our team first and helping them to be the best they can be. We encourage our leaders to support their team, generate solutions to problems and take accountability for their own work, to ultimately deliver for the customer.”

The Warehouse continues to maintain its commitment to Retail as a Career for its 8,500+ employees around the country, all while having fun and helping New Zealanders to flourish. We as a team are humbled and privileged to be recognised as the best Retail Employer of the Year for the fifth year in a row and continue to strive for the same commitment year on year.
