Paige is currently Sale Team Leader at The Warehouse Airport store. She has been working at The Warehouse for 10 years and is currently completing the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management degree at Massey University.
Why did you want to complete the Massey University degree? Because I’m always striving to do better and improve myself. Doing this degree part time has allowed me to continue to work in the company that I love while also completing a degree that is going to give me extra skills and knowledge that I can use every day.
What have you enjoyed the most about the Massey University degree thus far? My favourite paper so far was Introduction to Marketing. In this paper I was able to see how what we were learning could be applied in store. It showed me that deciding to do this degree was only going to further my knowledge to help me to be the best I can be.
What has been the most challenging part of the Massey University degree thus far? The most challenging part is making sure that I put time aside outside of work to watch my lectures and study my text book weekly. It’s the whole work, study, life balance and getting that right.
What advice would you give someone considering doing the Massey University degree? My advice would be to go for it. What have you got to lose? You will gain so much more knowledge and understanding of the retail industry that it will help you go further and achieve you goals.
Tell us about your career with The Warehouse I started off as a Christmas Casual in the Blenheim store and have worked my way up, this is now my 10th year with The Warehouse. I progressed through a number of roles including checkout supervisor and Customer Service before I was offered an opportunity at the Motueka store to be night fill supervisor. After undergoing training in the sales and service team leader roles I was appointed to Service Team Leader in Wainuiomata. Then 18 months later I was given the opportunity to return to the Blenheim store as Service Team Leader. I have now been appointed to my current role as Sales Team Leader at the Airport Store.
Tell us about your role as a Sales Team Leader at The Warehouse? I start my day by doing a floor walk to find out how the store is looking and what my focus for the day is while catching up with all of my team to see where they are at and if they need any help. I spend a lot of time coaching and interacting with my team to make sure they have what they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.
What is your favourite part of your role? My favourite part of my role is spending time on the shop floor with our customers. I also love getting on the PA system and advertising the deals that we are running.
Why do you love working at The Warehouse (Part of The Warehouse Group)? The Warehouse Group is constantly offering Team Members opportunities to develop. I have been lucky enough to receive a scholarship from The Warehouse Group to study via distance at Massey. My stores have always been very supportive in allowing me to take the time off where it is needed for my study. The Warehouse Group has always looked after me and the team discount that we receive is above and beyond other companies.
Where is your Retail Career heading? What type of role would you like to do in the future? My long term goal is to become a Store Manager. I have thought that I would like to become a People Support Business Partner or work in Store Support Office. The sky is the limit and I can only wait with anticipation to see where and how far I will go.
