MEET JOSH, SALES TEAM LEADER AT PALMERSTON NORTH WHO IS CURRENTLY COMPLETING THE MASSEY RETAIL DEGREE

Josh is a Sale Team Leader for our Palmerston North store and has been with The Warehouse for 5 years. He is currently studying the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management degree at Massey University.

Why did you want to complete the Massey University degree? The Massey Retail Degree is a big step in continuing my development within the business. It is relevant to my career pathway and has already helped me to improve in my current role.

What have you enjoyed the most about the Massey University degree thus far? As this is my second semester, I have found the Commercial Law paper to be very interesting whilst the business analysis has helped me drive the store forward using data.

What has been the most challenging part of the Massey University degree thus far? The most challenging piece has been taking the time to sit down and work through each paper. Although it has been a challenge at times, it all depends on how driven you are.

What advice would you give someone considering doing the Massey University degree? Be sure retail is 100% for you; ensure you know what you want in life and how far you are prepared to go.

Tell us about your career to date: I have worked at The Warehouse for 5 years now. My first role within was as a Night Fill Team Member for about 2 years. I then moved through  a number of other roles including Night Fill Team Leader for both the Palmerston North store and the Fielding store, Service Team Leader and then into my current role as a Sales Team Leader. I have also had the opportunity to work with the store development teams in building/refitting four stores around my region.

Tell us about your role at The Warehouse? As a Sales Team Leader in an Extra store, my role includes planning promotions including sales opportunities, and assisting the store to increase sales and GP$ and % year on year. Im accountable for general merchandise of the store including green gardening and entertainment. I have a team of approx. 20 people that I work with who all look after different aspects of the store.

What is your favourite part of your role? My favourite part of this role is leaving work every day knowing I have influenced the lives of all Team Members and the community, whilst advancing my store.

Why do you love working at The Warehouse Group? Every day is a challenge, however it’s a challenge you come back to for more. Every day is completely different and the dynamics of the job are ever changing whether it is the customers or the team. The company has offered me many opportunities to increase my knowledge, experience and career advancements.

What has been your career highlights within The Warehouse Group? Receiving the “Team Leader of the Year” award for region 4 in 2014 and receiving the scholarship to do the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management as well as all the opportunities I have had within many stores to advance my career.

Where is your Retail Career heading? What type of role would you like to do in the future? My aim is to become a Store Manager then move through to a Regional Manager role then to a National Operations Manager.
